In Victorian culture, it wasn’t uncommon for alive people to pose as being dead or in a deep sleep for photo. Less often, the dead were posed as being alive and photographed. The girl in the middle is supposedly dead.

There would be a post running up the back, with clamps at the waist and neck. There would be wires running down the arms to help the arms stay in position. The pupils are painted on closed eyelids.
